Financial literacy, workforce readiness, and youth entrepreneurship are essential pillars of innovation-driven economies

As economies across the Asia Pacific region seek new pathways for sustainable growth, innovation is increasingly recognized as more than technological advancement. It is about creating ecosystems where people, institutions, industries, and communities collaborate to unlock opportunity and inclusive prosperity.

This was a central theme at the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Dialogue on Open Innovation Ecosystems 2026, where Junior Achievement (JA) brought an important perspective to the conversation: the role of education in building the human capital that makes innovation possible.

Representing JA Asia Pacific, Dr. Krishna C. Alejandrino, Executive Director of JA Philippines, shared the country's experience in scaling financial literacy education through multi-sector collaboration. Her presentation highlighted how partnerships among educators, government stakeholders, private sector leaders, and communities have enabled financial education to reach approximately 16,000 schools and empower more than 500,000 students annually across the Philippines.

More importantly, the discussion demonstrated how educational innovation can strengthen national resilience, support workforce development, and foster long-term economic growth.

Innovation Starts with People

APEC has long championed innovation as a key driver of productivity, competitiveness, and economic integration across the region. Through its work on innovation ecosystems, APEC encourages economies to remove barriers to collaboration, facilitate knowledge exchange, and create environments where new ideas can flourish.

Yet the success of any innovation ecosystem ultimately depends on people.

Technology, investment, and infrastructure are critical enablers, but innovation cannot thrive without individuals who possess the confidence, financial capability, entrepreneurial mindset, and adaptability required to navigate an increasingly complex economy.

This is where JA's mission aligns closely with APEC's vision.

For more than a century globally, and across Asia Pacific for decades, JA has helped young people develop the skills and competencies needed to succeed in work and life. Through experiential learning in financial literacy, work readiness, entrepreneurship, sustainability, and digital skills, JA equips young people not only to participate in the economy, but also to shape its future.

The Philippine Experience: Scaling Impact Through Collaboration

The Philippines offers a compelling example of how open innovation principles can be applied to education.

As shared by Dr. Alejandrino during the APEC dialogue, what began as a shared vision among partners evolved into a nationwide movement that today reaches hundreds of thousands of students annually.

The success of this initiative was not driven by a single institution. Rather, it reflects the power of collaborative ecosystems where educators, policymakers, private sector organizations, volunteers, and communities work together to solve shared challenges.

This approach mirrors the essence of APEC's open innovation framework. Sustainable impact emerges when stakeholders co-create solutions, adapt them to local needs, and continuously refine them through learning and partnership.

By localizing content, empowering teachers, and building strong cross-sector alliances, JA Philippines has demonstrated how education systems can scale effectively while maintaining relevance for diverse communities.

The result extends far beyond classroom learning. Students gain practical financial skills, develop greater confidence in managing resources, and build an entrepreneurial mindset that prepares them for future economic participation.

Strengthening Asia-Pacific Economies Through Youth Development

The economic implications of this work are significant.

Across the Asia Pacific region, economies face common challenges, including workforce transformation, technological disruption, demographic shifts, and increasing demands for productivity and innovation. Addressing these challenges requires more than technical solutions. It requires investment in people.

Research consistently shows that financial capability, entrepreneurial skills, and career readiness contribute to stronger labour market outcomes, greater business creation, and increased economic mobility. When young people are equipped with these competencies early, they are better prepared to contribute productively throughout their lives.

JA's programmes directly support this objective by helping young people:

●        Develop financial literacy and responsible financial behaviours

●        Build entrepreneurial thinking and problem-solving capabilities

●        Understand the changing world of work

●        Strengthen digital and innovation-related skills

●        Cultivate leadership, adaptability, and resilience

Collectively, these capabilities help create stronger talent pipelines, more inclusive economies, and communities that are better prepared to respond to future challenges.

For policymakers and business leaders seeking to advance innovation-driven growth, youth development should be viewed not as a social investment alone, but as an economic imperative.

Building Open Innovation Ecosystems for the Future

The APEC dialogue reinforced an important lesson: meaningful innovation happens when ecosystems are designed around collaboration and shared value.

Education institutions, businesses, governments, and civil society each play a unique role in preparing future generations for economic participation. When these stakeholders work together, they create environments where innovation is more accessible, more inclusive, and more sustainable.

Across the Asia Pacific region, JA serves as a connector within these ecosystems. Through partnerships with schools, corporate volunteers, employers, industry leaders, and policymakers, JA helps bridge the gap between education and economic opportunity. The organization's model demonstrates how collective action can accelerate both individual success and broader societal progress.

As economies continue to navigate rapid change, the need for such collaboration has never been greater.

A Shared Commitment to Inclusive Growth

JA Asia Pacific's participation in the APEC Dialogue on Open Innovation Ecosystems reflects a shared commitment to building a future where innovation benefits everyone.

The Philippine experience reminds us that some of the most powerful innovations are not always technological. They are the systems, partnerships, and educational opportunities that empower people to realize their potential.

By investing in young people today, economies create stronger foundations for entrepreneurship, workforce participation, financial well-being, and economic resilience tomorrow. In this way, education is not simply a contributor to innovation ecosystems. It is one of their most essential building blocks.

As APEC economies continue to explore new models of open innovation, JA remains committed to ensuring that youth are at the center of the conversation, because sustainable economic progress begins with preparing the next generation to lead it.
